a blog about everyday heroes from around the world
Miss Wangari is the firs to woman in entire Kenya to achieve a PhD and she is also the first female professor of the University of Nairobi. She also happens to be the first African woman to be awarded the Nobel peace prize.
In 1977 Wangari resigned her position at the University of Nairobi to found the Green Belt movement on world environment day.
She inspired millions of women in the interiors of Kenya to implement the movement but initially it was limited solely to tree planting but now in conjunction with the NATIONAL COUNCIL OF WOMEN OF KENYA she has provided services to thousands of women in Kenyan villagers offering family planning, nutrition, as well as leadership skills to get the family lives moving. Wangari’s politician husband deserted her as according to him she was too stubborn to control!
But irrespective of all personal turmoil she has risen above personal tragedies as well as a nasty separation to be Time magazines 100 Most powerful women of the world.
Kudos to one determined woman!
