When Deland Chan was 16, she led a group of friends and created a beautiful oasis in the New York City concrete jungle.
She started an environmental group at the YMCA at 92nd street.

The members restored a neglected garden, taking time out to investigate which plants are good and bad for the city.

Delan started the project as part of Jane Goodall’s roots and shoots program.

She is a hero to New Yorkers, to the Youth and to Mother earth!
