Motorcycling for Healthcare

Jun 23, 2008 Author: sambriones | Filed under: Other

Andrea Coleman has always had a passion for bikes. But instead of being a hellraiser, she has chosen to do something productive with it instead. Andrea started Riders for Health, a charity that delivers health goods to the rural parts of Africa. They’ve managed to employ about 136 riders from Zimbabwe to deliver medicine and other supplies to different parts. The charity is funded mostly by bike enthusiasts.

Andrea was born just a little outside the UK. She had little interest in school but veered more towards bikes, the Chelsea football club and making money.

As a grown up, Andrea helped in raising money for the Chelsea football club. What she earned would then go towards her weekend bike trips. When one of her bosses took her to Somalia once, courtesy of Save the Children, Andrea realized her true calling.

Her trip allowed her to see the dire conditions in Africa. Women were being wheeled to hospitals in  wheelbarrows, small roads, an absence of healthcare workers because they couldn’t be transported, and a graveyard of old and used motorcycles as nobody knew how to use them and repair them.

In 1990, she and her husband set up Riders for Health. They managed to call on famous riders t dedicate a day of their time to help raise awareness to the cause.

Andrea hopes that with her efforts, as well as that of other motorcycle enthusiasts and social entrepreneurs, they will be able to help to alleviate the health problem in Africa.

Jason Crowe: Cellist Inspired!

May 28, 2008 Author: sambriones | Filed under: Other

The “Cellist of Sarajevo”’s story- that of a cellist who witnessed the killing of 22 neighbors in a bread line and proceeded to play his cello amid sniper fire for 22 days straight- inspired Jason Crowe’s “awakening”.

Jason made a tribute to the Bosnian people in the form of a Children’s International Peace and Harmony Statue. Jason’s efforts to raise money for this statue attracted the support of many celebrity peace activists.

Jason also started a kids newspaper in 1996 and he used the newspaper to help spread information about his mission.

Jason Crowe is a true Peacemaker hero.
