Aviva Landie of Denver was working as a babysitter for Gabe Levin. Gabe a, a four year old, was being fed lunch of matzo crackers, jelly, and cheese. Fortunately Aviva had been trained by the American Red Cross.

Abdominal Thrusts

Aviva told Gabe that he needed to take smaller bites so as not to choke on the cracker. But the child could not have understood. He took a huge bite of matzo. All of a sudden Aviva saw Gabe chocking due to the large bite. His face initially turned red and then became blue.

Aviva remembered her training and started administering abdominal thrusts. After five to six thrusts the cracker dislodged. Gabe was freely breathing again.American Red Cross training had saved the day. It had helped to save Gabe Levin’s life. Aviva was awarded the Red Cross Certificate of Merit, by the American Red Cross. This is the highest award given to an individual for saving lives by using the techniques taught at the Red Cross Health and Safety Services course. Aviva Landie was the hero of the day.
