Winnie Giesbrecht understands the pains of migrating Aboriginals. As a member of the Swampy Cree nations, she knows most native people do not find adequate housing when they come to the city for medical care. They have trouble understanding modern doctors, and the modern treatments don’t make sense to them so they end up abandoning the treatment.
To counter this, Winnie created a place for First Nation patients to stay and get medical treatment that caters to their needs. She put up Dial-A-Life Housing after a decade of fund raising and lobbying.
Winnie helps about 300 patients at a time. She houses them in the 36-unit apartment that’s for the organization. She also helps with employment issues by hiring aboriginal women to run the facility.
Dial-A-Life has grown so much since its conception, thanks to Winnie, who decided to stick it out, even when it was hard.
